Hello!   I'm Minerva Loos and I...

... believe that we as designers have a social responsibility we have to meet with our work.

That is why, we don't only have to think about how they can technically solve

a problem, but also about the importance of a certain issue, the moral and ethic aspects of their design and the consequences for society and environment.

I believe that founded knowledge about the things that surround us, from daily life objects to the city we live in, allows us to put them in a wider context, make new connections and thus find new ideas. Being able to  change perspective and switch in scale during the design process is one of the essential skills designers will have to possess to deal with emerging societal challenges and to design for transformation.

I believe that the work on all scales is characterized by a high need for a collaborative design process, across areas of expertise, professional fields and cultural sectors.

During my Bachelor in Architecture I learned about the design of the space we live in, from the urban to the residential context.

In my Master studies, I went  further in scale and explored the world of products, systems and materials. Both studies relate to my interest in the design of our daily live environment, how it is shaped, how we interact with it and how it influences us.

I'm intrigued by understanding and shaping our interactions with the environment, products  and the people that surround us.

In order to identify the opportunities that arise with new developments, designers have to be aware of the existing technological possibilities. It is important for them to know not only how developments on the technological field can be used for a successful development, but also how these can be steered in a direction that is meaningful for society. Only this way will designers have the ability to create the link between different fields of expertise, thus finding innovative solutions that truly provide added value.

I came to the University of Technology Eindhoven to acquire the knowledge and skills needed in order to design for change.

The last 2,5 years at the TU Eindhoven have been an enriching journey for me in which I learned a lot of new things, like making videos or creating websites, and enhanced my abilities and competences as a designer, by getting to know and using the academic skills to perform design research.

Through taking part in the Honors Program, I furthermore learned how to successfully apply my strengths to bring me and others further.

Additionally to the program courses, many other extra-curricular activities allowed me to grow even further, professionally as well as personally. I had the possibility to exhibit a project at the Dutch Design Week 2017 and in a museum and I will present a project at the TEI conference 2019.

So what's next?

While throughout my whole studies I have acquired different pieces of knowledge and skills which are required when aiming for transformation through design, my Final Master Project was a direct application to such a societal challenge. This project was an exploration of the general context and  possible future development opportunities. Hence, the process had to be open ended as the problem itself was ill-defined. This work allowed me to experience at first hand what designing for transformation can mean and the necessity for a rethinking of the design process in general.

The project has been very challenging, probably the most challenging I have done so far, but at the same time brought me a great step further in my professional development. I hope to get the chance to work further on this area, as I'm looking forward to gaining a better understanding of the phase we are entering – which Rocchi and Brand call the Transformation Paradigm1 – and exploring the future roles designers will have to take to meet the emerging challenges – always striving to become one of them myself.
