sharing ritual

group project | 3rd master semester

Rituals serve as orientation and structure for our everyday life, they are actions through which we can express our values.

All aspects of a ritual are interwoven, dependent on each other and need to be seen as a complete experience. This is what makes even the simplest rituals so complex and at the same time meaningful.

Hence it is interesting for designers to understand which experience qualities distinguish rituals from regular actions (Saalman, 2018) and how these can be designed. In this course I wanted to gain an understanding for the correlation between the many details that form a ritual and how this knowledge could be used to provide value through the design of rituals.

We focused on the act of sharing when coming together for a meal and how the inherent values experienced in this situation can be translated into design,

When coming together for a meal, the focus lies on the interaction between people, the being there and sharing with each other. The plates designed aim at supporting this moment by offering an experience which supports and enhances the values of sharing.

The turning movement that has to be performed before handing over a plates expresses appreciation and presents the content which is being shared. The wooden plates act as a stage for the cups, which are all specially designed for their ingredient.

FRANK is an interactive material experience that senses and reacts to the user's input. By embedding sensors, magnetic actuators and a microcontroller, we were able to program its behaviour in detail. Interacting with FRANK makes you experience a future where everyday environments will be composed of dynamic objects, intuitive interactions and stronger emotional connections between user and product.
